Meet our machines: Sumitomo Excavator

machinery, ExcavationShane Florio

At Hourly Hire we believe in having the best tools for the job and we constantly upgrade our machinery to ensure we keep up with the latest technology and innovations.

For the last decade or so we have relied solely on Komatsu's excellent range of excavators. Reliable and hard working, our fleet of Komatsu excavators have never let us down and have been up for any challenge we could throw at them.

Although we still love our Komatsu excavators, recently we decided to change things up by adding a brand new Sumitomo excavator to the Hourly Hire fleet.

Our Sumitomo excavator is fresh off the dealership and ready to work.

Top of the line doesn't even begin to describe this bad boy. This shiny new machine is equipped with thoughtful little extras such as a blade attachment for the front and an an extra large cup holder able to hold a coffee cup large enough to satiate even the most rabid caffeine fiend. Talk about cutting edge stuff!

Our Sumitomo may be classed as a middleweight, multi-purpose excavator but it is one of the larger machines in our fleet, with more than enough grunt to take down even the most stubborn house!

What can we say, we're suckers for a big booty.

What's even more impressive is that rather than being cumbersome, the Sumitomo is a nimble beast and is able to manoeuvre on even the most tight-access block with ease.

We have no doubts this shiny new Sumitomo will be the first of many!

How much will my excavation or demolition project cost?

Demolitions, ExcavationShane Florio

It's the question everybody wants to know the answer to: so, how much will my excavation or demolition project cost?

Unfortunately there is no straight forward answer to this question, as each house or block of land has a large amount of variables and unique factors that all impact the cost of demolition and/ or excavation.

Figuring out the cost of a demolition or excavation project is more complicated than you might think.

Figuring out the cost of a demolition or excavation project is more complicated than you might think.

One of the biggest factors affecting the price of a demolition project is whether the house contains asbestos or not. Asbestos products were only banned in Australia in 2003, which means that if your house was built between 1920 and 1990 there is a good chance some asbestos is present.

The reason the presence of asbestos can drastically impact demolitions prices is two fold; it is both time consuming to remove and expensive to dispose of.

To prevent dangerous asbestos particles becoming airborne, cement sheeting containing asbestos must be removed by hand. This is a tedious task that requires a licensed crew of asbestos labourers equiped with the correct safety gear.

The second factor is the actual cost of asbestos disposal, which is roughly 30c a kilo (adding up to around $330 a tonne).

When it comes to excavation there are four main variables that affect how much it will cost, these are:

The size of the land to be excavated: This is fairly self explanatory, the bigger the plot of land the more time and manpower it will take to excavate.

The type of soil present and the terrain: Obviously land with looser soil and no trees or large rocks is quicker and easier, and therefore cheaper, to excavate.

The reason for the excavation: What the land will be used for once the excavation is complete affects the condition it needs to be in once complete.

Equipment required: What equipment will be needed and whether soil will need to be removed or fill purchased.
